East York (E01 - E03)
East York is located north of Danforth Ave. between Broadview Ave. and Victoria Park Rd, south of O'Connor Dr. and Tailor Creek Park.
The township of East York was created in 1924, with a population comprised mostly of market gardeners and employees of local factories. After World War II, the baby boom led to a construction boom in the area, doubling the number of homes by the late 1950s.
East York is known for those 1950s brick bungalows. However, you will also find two-storey detached and semi-detached houses dating back to the 1800s, as well as more recently constructed homes.
Recreational facilities abound in the area; residents can choose from Stan Wadlow Park, the East York Curling Club, the Dieppe Park Sports Complex, the East York Soccer Club and several community centres. Tennis lovers have their choice of the East York Tennis Club, Dentonia Park Tennis Club and East York Collegiate, and just north of the neighbourhood is the public 18-hole Dentonia Park Golf Course.
The main streets running north and south are lined with specialty food shops, clothing stores and small businesses. While many of these are Greek businesses, the area is quite ethnically diverse. Just south of East York you'll find the Greek, Italian, Indian and Japanese restaurants as well as Irish pubs and martini bars of Danforth Ave. Most nights of the week the street is buzzing until well after midnight.
East York offers excellent access to transportation. The Don Valley Parkway is a short drive away, and downtown is 10 minutes away via Danforth Ave. The neighbourhood is also serviced by several bus routes and nine subway stations on the Bloor-Danforth line.
