Cabbagetown (C08)
The name Cabbagetown comes from a time when poor Irish immigrants grew cabbages on their properties and the name still remains. The neighbourhood has changed since the days when writer Hugh Garner called it the “largest Anglo-Saxon slum in North America.” After extensive renovation and gentrification, Cabbagetown has become a heritage neighbourhood famous for its quaint streets and lovingly restored 19th century architecture. Cabbagetown is recognized as the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian housing in North America. The Cabbagetown Preservation Association is famously strict about safeguarding the architectural integrity and historic character of this unique community.
